Linksys Access Point Setup — How to Proceed?

Linksys Access Point Setup

Linksys has made unparalleled contributions in the commercial market by offering wireless routers. Starting from small to large scale enterprises, everyone is using Linksys routers. These devices offer high-speed and uninterrupted internet services. The users can connect more than 12 devices with a high-end Linksys router. It can be even accessed remotely from Linksys’s dedicated mobile app.

The latest Linksys routers feature beamforming technology which improves the signal strength. This Linksys router eliminates the lagging issues while streaming online games or content. But, if you want to avail these benefits, it is important to set up the router first.

And, for that, you need to opt for the Linksys access point set up in the first place. Or else, you won’t be able to connect the Linksys router with the required devices.

You can set up the access point of the Linksys router in two different modes – AP and WP. Here we have mentioned both these processes for a hassle-free access point setup.

How to Perform the Linksys Access Point Setup in Access Point Mode?

The advanced Linksys routers have an access point mode that’s located in the settings. This extends the Wi-Fi network range by connecting the access points with the routers. Create a wireless network with a different SSID and password in this mode. Setting up the access point using the router’s AP mode takes less than a minute. But, before initiating this setup process, you should know the router’s IP address.

Make sure to connect the access point to the correct router port. Besides, the Linksys router users need to configure the access point’s wireless settings. Then, open a web browser, move to the address bar, and write the access point‘s default gateway.

Don’t know what the default IP address of the access point is? Look at the label, usually at the backside of the device, and locate the Linksys access point’s default IP address.

The access point’s default IP address might vary from one Linksys model to another. If you use the Linksys WAP54G, enter “192.168.1.245” in the address bar. But, if you have Linksys WAP11, write “192.168.1.251” instead and hit the Enter button. When the access point’s setup page opens, provide the login credentials. Tap on “OK” and then navigate to “Wireless” and enter the correct SSID.

What Else Needs to Be Done?

Now, go to the “SSID Broadcast” section and change the option from ‘Disable” to “Enable”. It allows the wireless devices to detect the Linksys access point’s network. Then, head to the “Wireless Security” tab of the access point’s setup.

And, from there, tap on “Security Mode” and choose the required option. If you select “WPA- Personal”, make sure to keep the “Encryption” type “TKIP”. Enter a hard to decode passcode in the “Passphrase” field and the key renewal number.

But, if you have chosen “WEP” from the “Security Mode”, keep the Encryption type “40/64-bit (10 hex digits). Then, write a 10-hex digit key in the “Key 1” field. And, if you want to set up a longer key, choose “40/128-bit (26 hex digits)”. Make sure to add both letters and numbers in the hex digit key.

Usually, the hex digit contains the letters from A-F and numbers from 0-9. Don’t use upper or lower case letters; that doesn’t work in hex digits. Click on “Generate” to complete the Linksys access point setup process.

How to Do the Linksys Access Point Setup in the Wireless Repeater Mode?

The wireless repeater mode extends the wireless signal’s range without declining the transmit rate. Use this mode to set up the Linksys Wireless-G access point. But, before that, you should check the wireless access point’s MAC address. Don’t know how to check that? Then, connect the PC to the Linksys router’s access point with an Ethernet cable. Set up a static IP address from the “Open Network and Sharing Center” section.

Right after this, you need to open a browser and enter the Linksys access point’s default IP address. It will open the Linksys Wireless-G access point’s setup page. If required, move to the “MAC Address” section and change the “Static IP Address” section.

Note down the wireless MAC address of the Linksys access point and proceed to the next step. But, if you are unable to get the MAC address, contact a router expert immediately.

Easy Steps to Configure Linksys Wireless-G Access Point (WAP54G)

After getting the Linksys access point’s MAC address, move to the setup page’s “AP Mode”. Search for the “Wireless Repeater” mode and click on it. Enter the remote Access Point’s LAN MAC address. Don’t put the colons (:) of the MAC address while writing it, and it might cause issues in the Linksys access point setup. After this, choose the “Save Settings” option to complete the setup process.

How to Setup the Linksys Wi-Fi Range Extender in Access Point Mode?

The latest Linksys range extenders have Access Point mode, which can be used for the setup. This mode offers a buffer-free experience and eliminates dead zones. But, the users need to turn on the router first to set the range extender as an access point. After that, connect the router with the Wi-Fi range extender with an ethernet cable. Click on the Network section and choose “Linksys Extender Setup” from the Wi-Fi list.

Open a web browser and access the setup page of the Linksys range extender. Choose “Next” and click on the “as a wired range extender (access point)” option. When the next page opens, choose the Network Type first and enter the network name, password. Then, choose a security mode, click on “Next”, and wait until the next page appears.
