The password is a crucial security measure for your router. So, you must always protect your D-link router’s wireless network with a password. After all, every other security measure might become ineffective in the absence of that. You can set a password for your router during the setup process. Find Your Router’s Default IP Address

If you cannot find it there, you must look for it in the service manual.

Apart from that, you can also use the connected device to find the IP address. Here is how you must proceed with that, depending on your device:

On a PC

Open the Settings menu and go to the Network & Internet section. Then, opt for viewing the Network Properties in the Status tab. This will open a new window with further details about the connected router. Look for the ‘Default Gateway’ listed there and check the value next to it. Then, use it to reach the login page for your router’s web interface.

You can also use the Command Prompt to find the default gateway. Open the program as an administrator and enter “ipconfig”. Then, check the value it shows next to the ‘Default Gateway’ and close the program.

On a Mac

Go to the System Preferences on your Mac device and open the Network section there. Then, click on your D-Link router’s network on the left panel to bring up its details. Click on the Advanced option at the right panel to open a new window. Then, go to the TCP/IP tab of this window to find your router’s default gateway.

You can also use the Terminal command line to know your D-link router’s default IP. Enter the “netstat-nr | grep default” command to bring up your router details. You should find the default gateway among the results.

Log into Your Router

Do you already know your D-Link router’s default IP address? Then, you can access the interface right away with the following steps:

Open a Browser

You do not need an internet connection to access the router interface. All you need to do is connect your device to the D-Link router. You can use a mobile device or computer for this task. Open any web browser you prefer, and then enter the router’s default gateway in the Omnibox. This should take you to the login page for your D-Link router.

Are you unable to reach the login page? Then, make sure you enter the IP address and check for connection issues. Switch to an ethernet connection if you are using a wireless one. And, that should provide you with a more stable connection.

Log in with the Admin Credentials

Does your router still have its default credentials? If yes, then you can find them on the device’s label. You can also look for this information on the internet. Enter your D-Link router’s admin credentials on the login page to open the interface.

Check for connection issues if you fail to access your router. Also, make sure that you have used the right credentials. Once you have accessed the interface, you can easily make any changes to your router’s network.

Set the Wi-Fi Password

D-Link routers to have a very simple interface that you can navigate through easily. And, that makes setting the Wi-Fi password quite an easy task. Proceed with the following steps to set a new password for your network:

Go to the Wireless Settings

Depending on the D-Link router model you are using, you should find a Wireless section in the interface. If it is not there, open the Setup section and click on the Wireless Settings. You should find a Wireless Security tab under Wireless Settings or Wireless section. Open it and check the options given there.

Enable a Suitable Security Mode

The latest D-link routers come with optimal security options for all types of requirements. WPA2 is the most effective security mode to connect the latest devices to your router. But, older client devices might not support this mode. In such cases, you can use WPA security.

Enter a Password and Confirm it

You can enter a password in the field under the security mode option if you have enabled security. Type the strongest password you can come up with to ensure optimal security to the network. Then, type it again in the next field to confirm it and click on Save Settings. This should set the new password on your router with immediate effect. But, if it does not, you must simply restart your router.

Setting a new password will disconnect all the connected devices from your D-Link router. So, you would have to use the new password on all of them to connect to the router again.

What to do if You Forget Your Wi-Fi Password?

You might often end up forgetting your Wi-Fi password. In such cases, you usually have nothing to worry about. All you need to do is log into your router with the steps mentioned above. Then, navigate to the wireless settings page as mentioned above and check the Wi-Fi password given there.

It is usually shown as dots on the interface, and you need to click on Show Key. Then, read the password and input a new one in its place, if required. You can then continue accessing your Wi-Fi network without any issues.

But, what if you forget the admin password for your D-Link router? If the device has its default credentials, you can find the admin password from the label mentioned before. Next, you have to reset your router in case you have been using a customised password.

Reset the Router to Set a New Admin Password
