Connections

The View Sonic PA503S 3600 Lumens has a good selection of ports for an economical projector, including HDMI, composite video or audio; S-video; two VGA inputs to connect to computers and one to connect to a monitor; two audio inputs and one audio output, one RS232 jack and one USB type B connector to connect to a computer.

Performance

We have tested the Viewsonic PA503S 3600 Lumens in our studio, with the projector placed about 2m from the screen; the image of the projector was about 50 inches (diagonal). The image was able to withstand a good amount of ambient light, which corresponds to the nominal luminosity of the 3600 lumens projector.

The data image quality is adequate for typical classroom presentations. In our text tests, the white-on-black type was somewhat fuzzy in the second smaller size and almost illegible in the smaller one.

The colors were reasonably good, although there were some soft yellow shades and fringes in some white areas and the yellow ones tended to look dull and mustard-colored.

We had similar results when I switched from VGA to an HDMI connection, with two variations: the dynamic range was improved (the ability to distinguish shading differences in very bright and very dark areas), but then we noticed some greenish shades in gray areas that had not been in the VGA images.

Eco Mode Video Quality

Video quality was adequate to show short and medium-duration video clips as part of a presentation. The rainbow effect – in which reddish-green-blue flashes appear, usually in bright areas against a dark background. It was noticeable enough in the video images as to be a distraction for people sensitive to it.

We realized the posterization: sudden changes of color where they should be gradual, in some scenes. And, also saw a bit of pixelation that is not uncommon in low-resolution projectors.

Eco Characteristics

The projector has several ecological features that can increase the life of the lamp up to 6,500 hours. The Eco Blank mode allows teachers to pause the presentation in a break from a presentation. This erases the screen and reduces energy consumption by up to 70% by pausing. Mode SmartEco adjust automatically the lamp brightness depending on the conditions of illumination. Viewsonic PA503S 3600 Lumens is a projector lamp that finds usage in many different areas.

3D Compatible

The View Sonic PA503S 3600 Lumens is 3D compatible, with support for 3D Blu-ray via HDMI and Nvidia 3DTV Play, allowing you to display 3D content from Nvidia 3D Vision. The 3D glasses with active shutter are not included. You may not be able to afford to equip a classroom with 3D glasses. This is because you could end up paying several times the price of the projector itself.

Other Options

To get better video quality on an SVGA projector, you can also consider the View Sonic PA503S 3600 Lumens SVGA LCD projector option. As an LCD-based projector, it is free of the rainbow effect seen with the Viewsonic PA503S and many other DLP projectors. The View Sonic PA503S 3600 Lumens also has a USB Type-A port to run presentations from a USB drive. One thing that the Viewsonic PA503S 3600 Lumens lack is the 3D capability of the projector.

The Viewsonic PA503S has a similar data image quality although it has somewhat more lumens (3600 lumens), a rainbow effect like that of the MS527 and somewhat weak audio.

Pros

It has three big advantages over any older and cheaper projector:ViewSonic PA503S 3600 review

(a) The image is bright enough to be clearly visible in a well-lit room. A dark room has a bunch of fluorescent lights all controlled by one switch, so it is on or off. The image from this projector is clearly visible with a ceiling full of lights on.

(b) It has a zoom, not a lot of range, but it gives some ability to size the image to the screen without having to move it back and forth on the table.

(c) The menu seems pretty easy to use and in any case, you don’t need to access it much.

Cons

The options are not very well documented, so you have to either guess what they mean from the one-line descriptions or experiment. For instance, there is an “auto shut-off” option. This means that if the image has not changed in X minutes, it would turn off automatically. Hence, like if you leave the projector on, it would turn itself off rather than burning out the bulb. But apparently, there’s nothing in there about “image has not changed”. It just shuts off after that time. So set it to 20 minutes and it will simply shut off. Then it would not come back on. Though it is not that much worse, just would have been nice if there was some explanation of what all the functions do. However, most of you use the defaults and do not worry about all the fancy options.

Final Words

The resolution on this is the only SVGA, but that is good. Mostly we have made slides with a few lines of text and they are very clear and distinct, easy to read. Occasionally we show a picture and again, even full-screen images are very clear. We tried just playing with projecting a video and that also seemed fine.

In general, the projector is a solid classroom projector, with many connection options and eco-friendly features. Its image quality is satisfactory for typical presentations in classrooms. Furthermore, its video quality is suitable for videos of not excessive duration.

The View Sonic PA503S 3600 Lumens, is a cheap DLP projector oriented to classrooms. It provides a solid data image and video quality suitable for short to medium-length clips. The best is its value for money.
