Netgear is a brand known for manufacturing wi-fi extender. So, if you own one Netgear WiFi extender and wondering how to set it up then you’ve come to the right place. Here, we’ll provide you a detailed guide about Netgear extender setup.

Pre-requisites for Netgear Extender Setup:

Before you begin with Netgear WiFi extender setup make sure to arrange for these prerequisites:

  1. You must place your router and the extender all in the same room of your home or office.
  2. The Netgear extender must get the necessary power supply to function properly.
  3. Most importantly, you must ensure that you have a functional home WiFi.
  4. Another prerequisite is to have at least two web browsers on your laptop or desktop that you are using. This is because you’ll need to log in to Netgear’s new extender setup page. So, if you fail to do so with one browser you can do it with the alternate one.

Once you make sure of having these prerequisites proceed to Netgear extender setup.

Essential Steps to Follow for Netgear WiFi Extender Setup

So, you’ve bought a Netgear WiFi extender to boost the network speed of your devices. Now, the first thing that you must do is to configure it correctly. A wrongly configured extender will bring up various issues that might hamper your work.

In this section, we’ll walk you through a detailed process of the Netgear extender setup. The setup procedure is presented in the following steps:

Step 1

At first, attach the extender to a power supply and turn it on. Now, connect the Netgear extender to either an Ethernet or a WiFi network.

To connect to the Ethernet you need an Ethernet cable. Thereafter, connect the Ethernet port on the extender with the Ethernet port of the PC via the cable. However, to connect the extender to a WiFi connection, open the WiFi connection manager. Now, locate the extender network named NETGEAR_EXT and connect to it.

Step 2

Once you’re done connecting the extender to a network open your web browser. In the address field of the browser type the following: www.mywifiext.net or http://192.168.1.250. When you type this the New Extender Setup Page will appear on your screen.

Step 3

Now, tap on the New Extender Setup option. Carefully, fill up the blank places on the page that appears and click on the ‘Next’ button. Make sure to check that the ‘Access Point/Extender’ button is put to the ‘Extender’ option.  After this, click on the ‘Continue’ option.

Step 4

This is one of the crucial steps for Netgear range extender setup. You now need to choose the WiFi network which you wish to extend. After selecting, click on the ‘Next’ option. However, if you don’t wish to extend any of your WiFi bands deselect them from the list.

Step 5

Type the WiFi network’s password and click on the ‘Next’ option. Choose an SSID or network name and a password for your new extender. Following this tap the ‘Next’ option. Thereafter, make sure to connect the WiFi-enabled device with the extender WiFi network.  When connected successfully click on the ‘Continue’ button.

Step 6

Once you tap on ‘Continue’ a message appears informing you that the extender is now ready. Select the ‘Next’ button and soon a registration page will come up on the screen. Carefully fill up the registration page and click on the ‘Finish’ option.

However, if you do not want to register you can click on the ‘Skip Registration’ option.

Step 7

Now, the Netgear extender setup process is almost complete. Unplug the extender and move to a location where you usually receive a weak WiFi network. However, ensure that this place is within the range of your WiFi.

Put the extender into a power supply and check the Power LED lights. It should be green. With the help of the Router Link LED check where the extender and router have the strongest connection. Now, reconnect the extender with the WiFi again.

Check the Performance of the Extender Setup:

Once you’ve set up the Netgear extender it’s time to check its performance. To check how well the extender is functioning first move the router or the PC to an area with poor network strength. Now, get back to the extender and see the Client Link LED.

If the LED is green then the extender is working fine. It means that the extended WiFi signal is reaching the area with weak WiFi strength. However, if the LED is red the extended WiFi isn’t covering all the parts.

Hence, you need to place the router closer to the extender.

Conclusion…

To sum up, extenders are essential devices to make sure you’re connected to the Internet. WiFi signal isn’t of the same magnitude everywhere. But, that does not mean you’ll be confined to one place to get a suitable speed.

So, if you’re wondering how to setup Netgear Wifi extender then follow the above steps.
